From Fr. Joe’s Desk for Sept. 3, 2023

Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.”

St. Mark 4:39

To the family of Christ at St. David’s,

This last week was another wonderful reminder that your priest is in fact STILL not Jesus. The winds of last Thursday didn’t seem to care at all about my rebuking, neither did the branches in the parking lot, or the downed power lines in the street. We live in a world of uncertain situations and unknowable circumstances. It is exactly for that reason, that I give thanks to you, St. David’s.

Following the storm, our church provided community, certainty, and stability as a kind of counterweight to the world. As soon as I put the call out for help in clearing up the grounds and repairing what needed to be repaired around the church, a small village of volunteers came out to help. After having to call off service on Sunday, we packed St. Non’s chapel for our Wednesday service, and volunteers came seemingly out of the woodwork asking if they might help distribute communion to those who have difficulty leaving their homes.

St. David’s is a force for good in the world because we care about one another, we care about our spiritual home, and we go out of our way to love the things of the Lord.

St. David’s, I am blessed as your priest because you are a blessing.

Be well my friends, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your community for help – it’s what we’re here for.
